If I Stand

Do you have one of those songs that just "break" you? One of mine is called If I Stand by Rich Mullins and yesterday while running (well mostly walking) it got to me. I was at Cheatham Hill trail bopping along, Ipod clipped in and listening to some good upbeat worship music when it hit. If you have ever heard this song you know it is more of a ballad but one that I can still move fast too. However, as I was walking down one of the long dirt paths surrounded by tall pines and hardwoods, I found myself slowing down...weeping and worshipping. Thank goodness it was late in the afternoon and there was noone on the path but me. But I couldn't help myself. I tend to get a little overwhelmed when I hear this song, it moves me. It reminds me how insignificant my temporary struggles are in the bigger picture of things. That God's grace is sufficient. That He gives us hope and a sure future! Boy did I need to be reminded of that!

And so...I just had to share this song with you. I encourage you to find it on Itunes or something and listen to it sometime. Rich Mullins is an AWESOME songwriter. His songs are so moving and have such a deep message. If you have never heard him you are in for a treat. I think Jars of Clay re-recorded this song. It is nothing like the original, nothing ever is really:)!

If I Stand

There's more that rises in the morning than the sun
And more that shines in the night than just the moon
It's more than just this fire here that keeps me warm
In a shelter that is larger than this room
And there's a loyalty that's deeper than mere sentiments

And a music higher than the songs that I can sing
The stuff of Earth competes for the allegiance
I owe only to the giver Of all good things

So if I stand let me stand on the promise that you will pull me through
And if I can't, let me fall on the grace that first brought me to You
And if I sing let me sing for the joy that has born in me these songs
And if I weep let it be as a man who is longing for his home

There's more that dances on the prairies than the wind
More that pulses in the ocean than the tide
There's a love that is fiercer than the love between friends
More gentle than a mother's when her baby's at her side
And there's a loyalty that's deeper than mere sentiments

And a music higher than the songs that I can sing
The stuff of Earth competes for the allegiance
I owe only to the Giver Of all good things

So if I stand let me stand on the promise that You will pull me through
And if I can't let me fall on the grace that first brought me to You
And if I sing let me sing for the joy that has born in me these songs
And if I weep let it be as a man who is longing for his

Indescribable gets me. When I went thru a dark time a few yrs ago, I stumbled across the verse speaking of how God placed the stars in the sky and knew them by name. For some reason that comforted me beyond words. Now when I hear that song and those words I get choked up.

I really like that one too. I love being out on the trail with that song playing. I sometimes catch myself singing out loud. How great is our God by Tomlin is awesome too. "He wraps Himself in light and darkness tries to hide, it trembles at His voice".

My favorite verse is "And there's a loyalty thats deeper than mere sentiments and a music higher than the songs that I can sing." You have to listen to the Rich Mullins version. You can find it on Itunes.
